Radiance
Artist: Park Chan-Kyong Date: Apr.29-Jun.11 2010 Venue: PKM Gallery, Bartleby Bickle & Meursault , Seoul Website: http://www.pkmgallery.com/
Park Chan-Kyong, who has been building media artworks on the theme of sociopolitical issues and the re-enactment of history, held his solo exhibition, Radiance at PKM Gallery and Bartleby Bickle & Meursault. Radiance, which borrows the title from a scene in the pansori piece, Shimcheong-ga, where all the blind and various animals gain their eye sight, is composed of 28 pie- ces of painting and installation borrowing the motive from Shim- cheong-ga. There are also photography and film works that re- cord Korea's shamanistic culture through temple visits and inve- stigations with the theme of the loss of the 'Korean Utopia'. In 2008, the artist developed a documentary work which recor- ded Korea's shamanistic culture which existed near Gyeryong Mountain in his solo exhibition Shindoan at Atelier Hermes. This exhibition can be thought of as an extension of such previous work. The way the artist examines shamanism, which is unfamiliar, strange, and at times frightening, creates an intense tension in the exhibited films and images.
