Angela de la Cruz, an artist of Spanish origin active in London, and Anna Maria Maiolino, an installation and media artist of Ita- lian descent from Brazil, are each having their solo exhibitions at Camden Art Center. Angela de la Cruz's first solo exhibition, After, held in a public art gallery, features works that experiment on the boundary be- tween painting and sculpture. The artist confronts the authori- ty of painting by accepting 'painting' as an objet, crashing, twi- sting, and folding it, and through this process she annuls the purity of the media, freeing herself from the traditional definiti- on of painting and ultimately dismantling the fantasy surround- ing the media. The sense of space and weight conjured up by her 'precarious' installation works, like a chair looking as if it has just sunk to the floor and objects hung on the wall as if they are just able to stay that way, transformed the space into an absolute source of energy - the aura. In Continuous, Anna Maria Maiolino, an avant-garde who is not afraid of being discussed in the contemporary art history of Bra- zil, presents her site-specific giant installation work and media works she has been working on for the last thirty years. Thou- sands of kilograms of her frequently preferred material of clay are rendered into shapes before rendering in the kiln. Hundreds of these clay pieces represent everyday life events, personal matters, society, etc, and are installed in the exhibition space. The multitude of objects of identical shapes, which are each bestowed with different meanings, makes up an impressive st- ructure. These lumps of clay begin to bear cracks as time goes by, drying them up. The original shape finally ceases to exist and such a process speaks for the futility of creation.
